Connective Cultures in the Post-Classical Mediterranean (4th to 10th century)

 The College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured, full-time position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, from scholars with a research focus on connective cultures in the post-Classical Mediterranean (4th to 10th century).

 Possible areas of study might include: the interaction of knowledge, people and practices; the social, political and/or cultural history of one or more connective Mediterranean cultures or communities; minority, diasporic or vocationally distinct social groups (e.g., merchants, scholars of science and medicine); interstitial and nomadic polities and cultures; translation; reappropriation of earlier cultural forms, materials or technologies.

 Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarly research and an ongoing program of publication. They must also be committed to outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. PhD must be in hand by August 15, 2013.

 Possible home departments include, but are not limited to: Art, Classics, History or Religious Studies. The appointee will also hold an initial two-year Mellon Fellowship in ‘Comparative Cultures of the Pre-Modern World’ at the University’s interdisciplinary Institute of Humanities and Global Cultures.

Regius Professorship of Greek

 Start date: 1 October 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.

A Regius Professor of Greek is due to be appointed by Her Majesty the Queen at the University of Oxford with effect from 1 October 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Professor will have a high international profile in the study of Greek language and literature, together with broad intellectual interests and sympathies, enabling her or him to enhance the global standing of the Faculty of Classics in research and to develop interdisciplinary connections within Oxford and beyond. She or he will offer academic leadership, engage in world-class research, and promote a culture of obtaining research funding among colleagues and graduate students. She or he will play a central role in graduate teaching and examining and will locate her or himself at the heart of graduate activities in the Faculty; she or he will also make important contributions to undergraduate teaching. She or he will contribute, as appropriate, to the Faculty’s development initiatives and to its active programme of outreach in schools and the wider community.

Bourses — Site européen des bourses

The submission service is now open for both the European Fellowship and Global Fellowship strands of the 2014 MSCA Individual Fellowships call (call deadline 11 September 2014), meaning that applicants can create a profile for their proposal on the Participant Portal and download the application documents. Bourses — latin and greek late antique hagiography

Two fully-funded ERC Doctoral Research Fellowships (4 years each) at Ghent University (Belgium)

The Department of Literary Studies at Ghent University (Belgium) is seeking well-qualified applicants for two fully-funded and full-time PhD studentships attached to the European Research Council project Novel Saints. Ancient novelistic heroism in the hagiography of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages (http://erc.europa.eu/cordis_search/project_details/109905). The Principal Investigator of this project is Prof Dr Koen De Temmerman, who, as a classicist, specializes in ancient fiction and its persistence in later periods.

There is one position available in the field of Latin late antique hagiography and another in that of Greek late antique hagiography.

The two successful applicants will start employment on 1 October 2014.

Deadline: applications should arrive no later than 15 July 2014.
