The Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Abteilung Istanbul (DAI) and Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) invite applications for newly established DAI-ANAMED Joint Fellowships in Environmental Archaeology to support. The fellowships will support research on the environmental archaeology of Anatolia using approaches such as archaeobotany, anthracology, environmental modelling, and related specializations. The primary responsibility of fellowship holders will be to conduct work relating to a longitudinal research project titled “Humidity & Society: 8.500 Years of Climate History in Western Anatolia.” Using Neolithic through Classical period materials from excavations associated with the DAI and Koç University (e.g., Barcın Höyük, Kaymakçı, Pergamon), the project aims to conduct high-resolution stable isotope carbon analyses of ancient wood and seed samples to estimate past relative humidity and water availability and thus to understand past climatic conditions for agricultural and pastoral activities.

ANAMED, located in Beyoğlu, Istanbul is dedicated to fostering research on the archaeology, art, heritage, and history of Anatolia through fellowships, exhibitions, symposia, publications, and library collections and services. Selected post-doctoral fellows will work in ANAMED’s environmental archaeology laboratory, help develop reference collections therein, and run hands-on workshops related to the fellowship. Fellows must be resident in Istanbul but might spend up to two months elsewhere in Turkey carrying out field work or on-site research related to the fellowship.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful applicants will have a strong combination of the following qualifications:

·         PhD in a related specialization (e.g., archaeology, anthropology, ancient history and/or related social sciences and humanities fields) granted after 15 September 2015;

·         Demonstrated expertise in archaeobotany, anthracology, environmental modelling, isotope analyses in archaeology, and/or related specializations;

·         Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills for working within teams;

Ability to work independently and to prioritize multiple, simultaneous projects;

·         Ability to communicate effectively (written and spoken) in English with project-related researchers as well as Koç University faculty, administration, staff, and students; Turkish and/or German is preferred as well;

·         Flexibility in work schedule, as needed; and

·         No military obligations.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The successful applicant will be provided a fellowship stipend commensurate with experience, health benefits, a research account, and assorted other benefits.

TERM

The successful applicant will be ready to start the one-year fellowship on 21 September 2020. Renewal thereafter is contingent on project progress and available funding.

The Department of History at Kalamazoo College invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor of Medieval or Early Modern Mediterranean history, to begin in September 2018. As the sole member of the department responsible for this period, the successful candidate will be expected to offer introductory and upper-division undergraduate courses on the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Islamic world or Colonial Latin America. These classes should reflect their specific expertise and the broader geographic and conceptual scope of the field. We also seek applicants willing and able to help reimagine the department’s current curriculum. We are especially interested in transnational approaches to Mediterranean history focusing on issues such as (but not limited to) ethnicity, migration, majority/minority relations, gender, and the interaction between the different religious and imperial entities of the region. The successful applicant will also teach within the College’s Shared Passages Program of first-year and sophomore seminars and senior capstone courses. The teaching load is six courses per year on a quarter system (2/2/2), with additional duties including directing senior theses and academic advising.

Ph.D. or evidence of imminent completion is required. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a high aptitude for and interest in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to the liberal arts, and a promise of scholarly excellence.

Job Description:
The position requires the active participation in research, teaching and administration. This involves:
• Developing and strengthening the independent research profile
• Preparing/writing a habilitation thesis
• Involvement in research projects and active participation in fieldwork related to Late Antique and Early Christian Archaeology
• Participation in the key research areas „Material Culture and History of Visual Culture Cultures and Media of the Visual”

Classics and Ancient History at the University of Manchester welcomes applicants for the position of Research Associate in Ancient Letter Collections to join a research project directed by Prof. Roy Gibson and Dr Andrew Morrison and funded from a major AHRC award (£0.5 million), to run for four years from December 2016.

The Research Associate is a pivotal role: the person appointed will be part of a team that co-authors two major books on ancient letter collections in Greek and Latin with Prof. Gibson and Dr Morrison. He/she will make a central contribution to field-creating research on ancient letter collections, and the project in turn will make a major contribution to the career development of the post-holder, since it offers opportunities both to participate in the construction of a major critical review, and to use and display powers of broader interpretation throughout an accompanying interpretative monograph.

The Project

This post is  attached  to  the four-year, AHRC-funded  research  project Ancient  Letter Collections, coordinated  at  the  University  of  Manchester  by Prof. Gibson  and  Dr Morrison. The aim of the project is to establish Greco-Roman letter-collections up to around 500 C.E. definitively as a separate field of study. It seeks to establish:

• The number of surviving letter-collections in Greek and Latin (prose or verse), and

• Their conventions of manuscript arrangement; in order:

• To make  it  possible  to  properly  examine  how  ancient  letter-collections  were  ordered and read.

The project will result in two substantial books with a major press: i) a critical review of each of the c.70 surviving Greco-Roman letter collections before 500 C.E., and

ii) an accompanying synoptic interpretative monograph. 

The   Research   Associate   will   have  a substantial role  in  the  co-authorship  of  both  volumes  alongside Prof. Gibson  and  Dr Morrison. More details on the project are available here:
