DESCRIPTION
The History of Art and Visual Culture Department (havc.ucsc.edu), at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of postdoctoral scholar – employee position in Mediterranean Studies predating the Early Modern Period. We seek a scholar who works on the visual production of Mediterranean societies beyond the traditional confines of art history and archeology, and studies the socio-cultural role of visual communication in areas such as the formation and impact of class, gender, sexuality, political or cultural affiliations, ritual, religion or ethnic identity. An interest in cross-cultural interactions and an interdisciplinary approach are highly desired. Some teaching experience at the university level is required. We are interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community through their research and teaching.

Under the mentorship of Maria Evangelatou, the finalist is expected to be active in research during this one-year term, and to interact with members of the UC Mediterranean Studies Research Project who work in our university and on other UC campuses. The successful applicant will also participate in teaching undergraduate classes in areas not currently offered in our curriculum, such as the civilizations of Bronze Age Aegean, Ancient Greece and Rome, Egypt, Phoenicia, the Persian Empire, Western medieval or Islamic cultures. The successful applicant will teach three consecutive five-unit courses in the undergraduate core curriculum as a lecturer. This competitive postdoctoral position emphasizes teaching responsibilities and provides the opportunity to enhance one’s experience in working with students from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The scholar will hold two university appointments. The primary appointment will be as a postdoctoral scholar at 100%. When teaching, the postdoctoral scholar appointment will be reduced and a lecturer position will be added (lecturer appointment usually 37.5% for a five unit course). At no time will the appointment drop below 100%.

HAVC supports the investigation of art and visual culture across a wide variety of theoretical perspectives in the cultures of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean and the Pacific Islands. As part of a vibrant community of faculty and graduate students in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, we encourage collaborative projects and foster innovative research. The successful applicant will have opportunities to share research interests and present work in progress in a number of contexts, including HAVC’s graduate program in visual studies.

UCSC is located among redwood forests and meadows overlooking Monterey Bay, along California’s Central Coast, in close proximity to Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. The campus currently operates on a schedule of three 11-week quarters per academic year.

Life Is Short, Art Long : The Art of Healing in Byzantium – Pera Museum, Istanbul

Life Is Short, Art Long

The Art of Healing in Byzantium

11 February – 26 April 2015
Pera Museum, Istanbul

This exhibition takes its name from the famous aphorism by Hippocrates and examines the art and practice of healing in Byzantium from Roman times to the late Byzantine period.

Curated by Dr. Brigitte Pitarakis, Life Is Short, Art Long examines faith, magic, and rational medicine as methods of healing. It traces the “art of healing” from the foundations laid by Apollo and Asklepios, healers of antiquity, and Hippocrates and Dioscorides, the founders of rational medicine and also examines the roles of the physician saints. Among the other topics covered and objects on display are icons, reliquaries, and amulets, marble carvings, medical equipment, plants and herbs, medical and botanical manuscripts, and the centers of healing and miracle in Istanbul.

The exhibition reveals that the belief that illnesses were primarily caused by demons co-existed alongside a rational understanding of health and medicine based on the teachings of Hippocrates. The “art of healing” was practiced by physicians, saints, and magicians and involved practices ranging from surgery to daily cleansing of the body and the spirit to exorcism and the veneration of saints.

The works offering insight into Istanbul’s Byzantine past have been loaned from the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople, the library of the Holy Trinity Monastery of Halki (Heybeliada), the Foundation of the Yeniköy Greek Orthodox Church of Panayia and School, the Rezan Has Museum, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, Oxford University Herbaria, the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Kastoria Byzantine Museum, and private collections.

Appel à contribution – The Influences of the Dominican Order in the Middle Ages

The Influences of the Dominican Order in the Middle Ages

 Lincoln College and Blackfriars, Oxford
10-12 September 2015
Proposal Deadline: 1 March 2015
http://torch.ox.ac.uk/influences-dominican-order-middle-ages

From the modest group of St Dominic and his sixteen followers, the Dominican Order grew rapidly in the first century of its existence, establishing itself across Europe as a learned Order of Preachers.  This interdisciplinary conference will seek to explore the influences of the Dominican Order on all aspects of medieval life.  The conference theme of ‘influence’ can be interpreted in its broadest sense, encompassing the large-scale influences of the Order and the legacy of its prominent figures, or can be examined on the personal level, such as the impact that the Order had on those that came into contact with it, both within and outside the Order.

 Papers might address topics such as:

–          how the Dominican Order influenced other religious orders and medieval life more generally (papers may consider this influence with regard to art, architecture, universities and education, book-making, theology, liturgy, legislation, or other relevant disciplines);

–          influential Dominicans, such as St Dominic, Humbert of Romans and Thomas Aquinas, and their legacy to the Dominican Order or the use of their teachings outside of the Order;

–          preaching and other means by which Dominicans sought to influence the local populations they encountered;

–          controversies resulting from Dominican influence (e.g., in the universities, in ecclesiastical government, etc.);

–          Dominican education and the training of novices: the shaping of the Dominican religious life.

 Keynote speaker: Mary Rouse

 The conference will be held at Lincoln College, Oxford and Blackfriars, Oxford from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th September 2015.  This conference is interdisciplinary and open to scholars working in any field of medieval studies.  Papers of 20 minutes are welcomed, although other formats may be considered.  Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words, and include with it your paper title, name and affiliation (if any), contact email, AV requirements, and a short biography (this has no bearing on the evaluation; it is simply for distribution to chairs).  All abstracts should be submitted by 1st March 2015.

 All enquiries and proposals should be sent to Eleanor Giraud: eleanor.giraud@lincoln.ox.ac.uk
